in 1970, Dee Hock didn’t invent the credit card. he invented a network that banks would trust enough to join. that design became VISA. nearly $700 billion later, it is one of the most important pieces of financial infrastructure on earth. and Dee still thought he failed. not because Visa was small. because it was narrow. he got the world to agree on payments. he wanted something else: a living system where value, identity, rules, and coordination could move together. what we now recognize as programmable money. tokens. smart contracts. a network that wasn’t just rails for humans swiping plastic. Micky Malka met him in 2007. then he kept showing up. year after year. into Dee’s nineties. a restless mind still explaining blockchain to a younger investor who would later back Coinbase, Robinhood, Revolut, and Nubank. Dee taught him how networks actually work. how you get risk-averse institutions to behave like a single organism. how you design for chaos and order. how you get people to become the best version of themselves. then Dee died in 2022. the idea didn’t. the next users of a payments network won’t all be people. they’ll be agents: software given a budget, a mandate, and permission to act. buy compute. pay a merchant. settle a contract. rebalance a portfolio. do it at 3 a.m. without a card in a wallet. Visa is already building for that world. so is everyone else. the interesting question is who inherits Dee’s unfinished version, not the logo, the market cap, or the interchange. the version he said he never got to release. Micky is one of the few people who heard that version directly, over and over, from the man who built the last one. that’s the story. “the student kept the part the teacher never shipped.” $TIBBIR
